In March 2012, we recorded an intense and deeply personal Guftagoo with Raghu Rai (18 December 1942 - 26 April 2026)- the ace photographer from India who, at the age of 35, was nominated to Magnum Photos by none other than Henri Cartier-Bresson nearly half a century ago.

In this Guftagoo, I spoke with him at length, as is my way, about both his personal and professional journey- tracing the evolution of a man who saw the world not merely through a lens, but through a deeply संवेदनशील दृष्टि.

He reflected on his approach to photography as both functional and conceptual, revealing how instinct, discipline, and empathy came together in his work.

It was an immersive and rare conversation, where he spoke with complete openness, without inhibition- allowing the listener a glimpse into the mind and spirit of a true chronicler.

With the demise of Raghu Rai, we have lost not just a photographer, but a quiet yet powerful chronicler of India’s society, polity, and evolving aesthetic journey- someone who bore witness to its truths with honesty and grace.

Guftagoo pays its heartfelt condolences to all those bereaved in his family, and to the countless admirers whose lives were enriched by his vision.
